Sharing knowledge, joy and love for classical music is my guiding principle in creating engaging performances and presentations.
I develop my own projects, and work for concert halls, orchestra’s, international music competitions and broadcasting companies.
My musical career was kickstarted after winning the 3rd prize at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht, NL. Since, I have performed all over the world- including with conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Jaap van Zweden, Jun Märkl, Otto Tausk, and Jean-Bernhard Pommier. From 2024 onwards, I’m presenting the RO NOW-series for the The Hague Philharmonic.
In 2020 I picked up the baton. I am currently the conductor of the Kennemer Youth Orchestra, with which I will tour Hamburg and Copenhagen in March 2025. I have taken lessons with Jurjen Hempel, and am regularly advised by Ed Spanjaard and Antony Hermus. My conducting career was stimulated by the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam and publisher Lannoo, who commissioned me to produce a podcast and book called ‘The maestro with the knitting needle’.
As a presenter – fluent in English – I’m regularly involved with international music competitions such as ICCR, Liszt Utrecht, and the Horowitz Competition. For the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, I’m a recurring support act for their concerts with Lorenzo Viotti and others. Annually, during the summer series of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, I interview classical music stars such as Joyce DiDonato, Antonio Pappano, Iván Fischer, Renaud Capuçon, Gustavo Gimeno and Yuja Wang.
Full biography Full biographyPa-pa-pa-paaa! As a twelve-year-old boy, Christiaan heard Mahler’s Fifth Symphony for the first time. The piece never left him. The leaps of the trumpet! The triumphant strings! And on the record sleeve a man in white tie, with his back to the audience and a baton in his hand. Little Christiaan imitated him for hours, his grandmother’s knitting needle in his hand, until he could make the cymbals blare on command – bravo to the maestro with the knitting needle!
Twenty-five years later, Christiaan’s fascination with the baton remains. In The maestro with the knitting needle (in Dutch), he travels through centuries of musical history. He takes you on tour through Europe, with the great orchestral conductors of the past and present as his traveling companions.
